About Donation

BECOMING A DONOR

Check the organ donation box at the DMV the next time you renew your driver's license. Also, fill out the simple form at www.donatelifeindiana.org to ensure that your organs go to people who desperately need them. Fill your family in on the decision, and make sure everyone who is important to you knows about your choice to donate life.

WHAT CAN BE DONATED?

Organs that can be donated include heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, pancreas, and small intestine. Tissue that can be donated includes corneas, bone, blood vessels, heart valves, skin, tendons and ligaments.

FACTS & FIGURES

Organ donation is one of the only ways to help people after you're gone. One person can save up to eight lives with their organs...just their organs! Eyes and tissue can also be donated. Every 10 minutes, another person is added to the transplant waiting list. In 2011, almost 29,000 lives in the U.S. were saved through organ transplants. However, over 110,000 people are currently waiting for a lifesaving transplant.

STATISTICS

There are over 124,000 people on the waiting list for an organ in the U.S.

There are also over 1,000 people in Indiana alone on the list.

18 Americans die each day waiting for an organ transplant.

Every 10 minutes, someone is put on the waiting list.

3.4 million Hoosiers are registered as donors.

WHO CAN DONATE?

Anyone who is at least 15 years of age can hold a learner's permit in Indiana and become an organ donor through the DMV. At that age, you can become a member of the Indiana Donor Registry while getting your permit. As long as you're over 13, though, you can sign up for the Donor Registry at donatelifeindiana.org. Parents still have the final decision for donors under the age of 18, though.

HOW DO DONATIONS HELP?

People who have been injured in accidents or fires, who suffer from diseases or who are born with birth defects can all benefit from organ transplants. Seemingly healthy people may, some day, end up needing a live saving transplant!
